Tools for success in the music industry.
There are many tool needed to be successful in any business in general not just the music business. However the music business is deemed to be one of the riskiest businesses out here, and that is very true. The music industry is deemed "Risky" due to the fact that investors are investing into a product that's not even created yet. That being said it is possible to make a living in the music industry, off of doing what you love to do. The tools of the music industry are here to help you, and I am here to break it down for you, to help you understand whats needed to succeed. How you go about handling your business will be they to being a success or not, and a lot of that comes to money management.
The tools of the music industry:
1) JOIN A PRO (Performance Royalty Organization) (ASCAP,BMI,SESAC) - The three pro's listed above are all official pro's for American and Canadian recording artist's. What pro's do is help collect your money and help you get paid for a lot of different music uses including radio play, and more.
2) OWN ALL YOUR MUSIC - This is a grey area of the hip hop music industry. You CANNOT distribute or can you make a penny off of music you have no rights to. You may lease beats from producers, however once you hit your distribution limit, if the producer has sold that beat to someone else exclusively you can not release it, so you no longer have profitability, and that track is nothing but promotional material.
3) DISTRIBUTION - All music needs distribution to reach sales hubs and the pipeline for success. Here is where you need to be careful on who you have do this, and their pipeline. I would always recommend the INDIE MUSIC FACTORY (IMF/Ingrooves/Universal) , and for direct demo submission you can reach out to Lee Fleshman (A&R IMF/Ingrooves/Universal)
4) Public Relations (PR Work) - Public Relations is another huge key to success in the music industry. The hip hop scene depends on PR people, some are better known as Hype Men. These are the people who deliver your story to the press and the public. These people can be and will be a very expensive part of your monthly budget. They are very much needed.
5) Good Management - A Good Management team is a necessity to achieve greatness. Your management team will plan your movement in your city, and get with booking agents and club promoters to book your tours, put you on stage, handle your endorsement deals, and basically is a part of your every day movement. (Not to down artist's but the majority of artist's CAN NOT manage their own careers, because their heart is involved. Heart in business is bad business)
6) Marketing - This is one major overlook! The one key in any business is you CAN NEVER over market a market. Never stop marketing yourself or your product, NEVER!!
